Oreos…My favorite J:-
Wow Oreos “the most popular sandwiched cookies, available in many parts of the globe…the best selling cookies of 20th century…J though recently introduced in India, it is America’ favorite cookie right from early 19th century …I still remember Shiv’s b’day last year when I actually planned preparing an oreo ice-cream cake (as he loves ice-cream)…D thought of searching for Oreos in stores made me worry…for if didn’t find any…then with what would I replace these lovely cookies with…? For the planned ice-cream cake…but as it is said “People in action are favored by Goddess of Luck “ I happened to go to Sweet Chariot to buy the soft Cake for the same occasion .i.e. Shiv’s B’Day-one more favorite pastry of us both from all time favorite cake shop…(as planned for the B’Day theme…the requirement was of two lovely cakes-so it would be great to get another one from his favorite shop), the lady in the store when asked informed me that I could check out oreos in Nilgiris…I might find some…and yes I did J all thanks to her and 3rd block Nilgiris…they made our special day more special J
Well this time things were pretty easier when it came to plan “Oreo chocolate truffles” as here comes our own production with Qadbury’s oreo- the chocolatey sandwich biscuits….(How I wish they paid me for advertising their product…with delightful oreo dessert meals…it is similar to dreaming about a shredded wheat and waking up to find half mattress gone…wake up shilpa wake up J)…
Oreo Ice-cream cake Recipe :-
Ingredients:
1) 3 packets of oreo cookies (about 130 grams of each packet), you can decide the no. based on the net quantity.
2) About 1 litre of ice-cream (the flavor and brand of your choice…well vanilla taste the best…also Amul ice-cream’s Raj bhog could be tried might taste good for this recipe…but I prefer preparing my own ice-cream…the lovely chocolate flavor home made one…(please do follow the instructions to prepare ice-cream which is a separate post…)
3) A quarter cup of melted butter
4) Whipped cream (Kindly follow the instructions on how to whip a cream on separate post…)
Whipping cream is rarely available in any supermarket in Bangalore
Gaush how do i explain…Hunting for whipping cream is as good as finding something from shiv’s cluttered drawers J (Next to impossible!!! he says IM POSSIBLE…that means it’s possible to keep things neat someday J)Last year I managed using Pillsbury creamy vanilla icing…which is too sugary…its always better to whip a cream…less sugary in taste-Perfect, in fact that makes any pastry perfect…But the question arises where can I find a whipping cream? The cream available in tetra-packs like Amul ,Vijaya etc…cannot be whipped at all. This cream contains a certain percentage of stabilizers, emulsifiers which help to increase the shelf life, hence disturbing the natural properties of cream which help to make the cream good for icing purposes. Instead it is better to be made from fresh cream available in local dairies. But they are no local dairies in Bangalore supplying it (may be I got to research more) and the local bakery guys keep it as a secret…akhir unke business ka sawal hai…I found one of the bloggers has posted regarding the same stating that she bought it from SPAR (one of my favorite supermarkets where I often shop) so I rushed to spar for this time’s shiv’s birthday cake icing purpose , but the vendors informed me that yes they were selling the freshly prepared cream until may-june but since the buyers are not consistent so they stopped it as they had to pay for the loss of 20 kgs of cream which was spoilt for no buyers…Now I had really to think on next option…in d corner of my mind I always thought but never visited one place where they were chances for me to get this product that was “Institute of Baking and Cake Art” so I rung up my favorite helpline “Just Dial” got the institute’s address and immediately rushed towards my destiny-Its so fantastic exploring Bangalore…especially when u have a good company like my sweetie (My Scooty Streak J)she makes my tasks easier from MG-Brigade till narrow lanes of KR market where I have to visit often for accessories interior design work I take up. OK back to the topic…after reaching the institute I finally found the whipping cream pack of 1kg (they do not sell lesser than this) and got back to my task of preparing “Tiramisu” this time to surprise shiv… (Recipy coming up soon)
Methodology:-
- Set aside about 12-14 cookies for later cake decoration purpose (just as movie beginning with climax J)
- Now take the remaining cookies in the mixer and crush them into fine powder.
- In a bowl mix the powder with the melted butter.
- Place the mixture at the bottom of the pan in a fine layer, then refrigerate the pan along with the mixture for about 10 mins…for it to harden and form a base for cake.
- Make sure the ice-cream is slightly softened before usage, take out the ice-cream in a bowl and give it a good stir (make sure it gets a good thinner consistency) and pour it above the oreo base in the pan.
- Now cover the pan with aluminum foil (or any tightly placed plastic cover) and refrigerate for about 4 hours min.
- Remove the pan from the refrigerator, run a knife from the sides of the pan so that it is easier to take out the cake from the pan.
- After taking out the set ice-cream from the pan, start adding whipped cream on all sides of the cake, make sure the icing is leveled and neatly done. Now decorate it with the cookies kept aside, you can part the cookies into two and start placing it at the sides of the cake ( it gives a defined look to the cake) and casually crush the remaining cookies with hands and just randomly start placing it on top of the cake.
- Now refrigerate the cake for another 3 to 4 hrs. for it to set, and your delicious oreo ice-cream cake is now ready.
I had a very tough time while preparing this cake, not for its simple methodology but the extra task to hide and prepare it as a surprise to shiv…since my limited hours were only evenings and night after office hours.(the last task of decorating the cake was adventurous at early morning 4 am after the cake was all ready to be iced, doing it without his notice is really challenging, as he always had an idea about the Sweet Chariot cake (which is fixed for all d birthday celebrations) but this lovely oreo cake was such a pleasant surprise J
